Jeep Camping Gear: Campers & Trailers for Jeeps

Jeep Camping Gear

Jeep Camping Gear for the Off Road Enthusiast!

Growing up around and being a current owner of a Jeep (46′ Willys), I share a fondness, as many others do, with this iconic off-road capable vehicle. With both a passion for Jeeps and camping, curiosity led me to start wondering, what Jeep camping gear options are out there? As the oldest off-road vehicle and SUV brand, Jeeps have maintained the same basic look since their introduction in 1941 during WWII, and there aren’t too many people who wouldn’t be able to name one at a glance. The typical Jeep owner obviously loves the outdoors, and probably loves to camp too. These robust 4-wheel drives can get us where we want to go in the back country, and there’s some new jeep camping gear options available to make life a bit easier when getting to our off-road destination.

After spending some time researching Jeep camping gear, here’s what Savage Camper found:

Jeep® ActionCamper© by Thaler Design

Thaler Design in Austria touts the ActionCamper as an “expedition ready slide-on camper” for Jeeps, with a shell made of fiberglass and a pop-up top, the interior of this camper looks well thought out and has amenities such as a sink, stove and porta-potty just to name a few. The ActionCamper appears to have lots of storage and enough room for two to sleep. Thaler Design has a multitude of photos on their website of the ActionCamper in “action” and is the ultimate in jeep camping gear.

Overlander Jeep Awnings by Smittybilt

Jeep Awning for Camping

One really cool Jeep camping accessory is the Overlander Awning by Smittybilt. One can only imagine how handy this would be on a hot day! With easy setup, the awning comes in 2 sizes: 6.5′ x 6.5′ and 8.2′ x 6.5′. Some of the features include:

  • Extruded, lightweight aluminum construction w/ telescoping poles that twist lock
  • Heavy duty, UV stabilized cover
  • Waterproof storage bag
  • Stakes and ropes for securing legs in harsh conditions

Overall, the awning weighs just over 20 lbs.

Jeep Camper J30 Pop-Up Hardtop

The J30 Pop-Up Camper by Ursa Minor Vehicles almost looks OEM, with it’s low profile design (which is also nice for fuel economy). The J30 jeep camper is designed for 4-Door, 2007-2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited® Vehicles. The JL30 hardtop model is designed for 2018 models. Some of the features that come with this cool Jeep camper worth noting, include:

  • Sleeps 2 adults – 7×4 foot mattress w/ washable cover
  • Interior LED lighting
  • Panoramic views and ventilation w/ zipper screen windows
  • Hard top is removable

Tentrax Off-Road A/T

These little tent trailers appear to be able to handle off-road no problem as Tentrax says they can easily be towed to remote off-road camp sites. Designed to be lightweight and made with fiberglass for superior stregnth and versatility, the Off-Road A/T can withstand the rigors of rugged terrain conditions. Lots of options available including up to 19 inches of ground clearance, a 6 inch lift kit to fit 38″ tires, a special hitch to increase articulation, skid plate and multiple rack systems available. There are also some good pictures of the Off-Road A/T in action on the Tentrax website.

J180 Jeep Tent by Ursa Minor Vehicles

Ursa Minor Vehicles also made a Jeep camper model that folds out into a roof top tent: the J180 Hard Top Fold-Over (pictured), however they discontinued it in 2015. It sports 6’6″ standing room when open. Like their J30 pop up, the J180 camper is made with lightweight composite materials which they say minimize impact on handling while decreasing noise. The Jeep tent has low-current interior LED lighting. When closed, the hardtop camper has a low, streamlined profile to minimize wind noise and maintain gas mileage. You can still get parts for these campers through the manufacturer.

ARB Touring Jeep Tent

If your looking for an option that doesn’t require a bunch of modification to your Jeep, consider the ARB Roof Top Tent. The tent mounts to a roof rack and unfolds easily in minutes. Folds up with all your bedding in it to free up storage elsewhere. Optional annex provides added space and protection from the elements. Other options include a retractable awning and purpose designed roof rack cage. The tent is also mountable to the rear or side of a vehicle or trailer. Comes with a sturdy, retractable aluminum latter and lots of other goodies. View more roof rack tents.

EarthRoamer XV-JP Jeep Camper

Before getting your hopes up with this sleek looking Jeep camper with fold-out tent top, I have to inform you that EarthRoamer discontinued this model in 2011 so they could focus their development resources on hard-shell models for other 4-wheel drive trucks, as stated on their website. However, they still feature the camper on their website. Surely, if the demand was there, they’d start making them again. It’s just so cool looking that it had to be put it on the list.

Jeep® Off-Road Camper Trailer

This Jeep camper trailer (which no longer appears to be in production, so check for used models) sports lightweight, all-aluminum construction and is designed to look like the back half of a Jeep. It comes in two different models: The Jeep® Trail Edition for casual campers with 12 inches of ground clearance, and the Jeep® Extreme Trail Edition for maximum offroad capabilities with 15 inches of ground clearance, a full underbody skidplate, and 35-inch tires.

Jammock – A Hammock to Upgrade Your Jeep Camping Gear

Not only is it a shade soft top for your favorite 1987 – present day Wrangler, the Jammock Jeep Hammock can handle up to 2 people and 350 lbs. What a great way to easily take a load off on the trail, without having set up any gear – just park under a tree, kick back and relax. It’s reasonable too, under $100.
